What Exactly is postpartum?

Postpartum refers to the time immediately after the placenta is birthed
(yes – the birth ceremony includes the placenta being born!)

the postpartum window continues indefinitely –
or until you are again pregnant with life.

Mamas often expect to bounce back – some do, some take longer.

Truly the question here is –
what are we bouncing back to?

So often, Mamas are given a 'clinical' average of 6 to 8 weeks for recovery, then given the 'go ahead' to resume regular life. They think they are supposed to feel 'themselves' again.

There is NO exact time frame for you to 'feel yourself again. Remember – you are born anew after birthing this baby. You are rediscovering life.

Postpartum is a time of tender, patient, grace. It is a time of adaptation and is formative for Mama, Papa & Baby. Research shows new Papas/Fathers also undergo biological and psychological changes as well.

Rushing through your Postpartum phase only contributes to deeper dysregulation for Mama & Baby.

The Sacred Window:

The Sacred Window, also known to many as The 4th Trimester can be understood as a liminal bridge where Baby experiences the outside world as a external womb.

A harmonious, undisrupted 4th Trimester supports one of the most biologically sensitive bonding windows in human development.
The MotherBaby dyad functions as a tightly linked regulatory system. The newborn’s nervous system is immature and relies on proximity to stabilize heart rate, temperature, blood sugar & stress hormones. This is accomplished by skin-to-skin contact, scent, voice & feeding.

Repeated interactions that offer baby presence and communication wire the infant brain for trust, stress resilience and relational security. It also uplifts maternal confidence and caregiving attunement.

When this period is protected from excessive stress, separation or overstimulation, the mother’s endocrine recovery, milk supply, uterine involution and nervous system stabilization are better supported.

A calm, supported environment reduces sympathetic “fight-or-flight” activation and allows parasympathetic repair processes to unfold at its natural pace.

Every mama deserves to step into this new chapter
supported, vibrant & nourished
so she may
flourish in the decades to come.

Cultures that embrace the Sacred Window:

  • Ayurveda: also known as sutika paricharya, traditionally embraces 40-42 days of abhyanga (warm oil massages), confinement, warmth, deep nourishment, herbal support and vata-pacifying foundations. Childbirth leaves a void in the abdomen, causing an increase in Vata; potentially leading to anxiety, pain and dryness.

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine: often referred to as zuò yuè zi’ or a ‘sitting month’ that practices maternal recovery through specialized yin replenishment. Ranges from 30-100 days

  • Maori tribes embrace body care including massage & warm stone treatment to support organ realignment.

  • Nigerian/Yoruba tribes: partaking in “Omugwo family members care for the new mother and her baby in the 40-180 days postpartum. It involves supportive foods, massage, sitz baths & more with the aim of soothing the transition for new moths, ensuring she is not alone.

Mama, you are no longer operating on same blueprint that you were before birth.

You are in a time of discovery - it is a transition that is innately deserving of grace, warmth and receiving. This period of time is when your body, mind and spirit are extremely sensitive.

Be held during this sacred window; the single most important task for you right now?
